Hello 👋 The holiday rush is winding down, and the workday and routines are starting to fall back into place. In this article, we look at how HR managers can reward employees for their efforts in a way that benefits both the employee and the company.

Employee gifts can be very effective

Unikum Regnskap is an accounting firm that helps its customers with accounting, payroll and HR-related tasks. Managing Director Truls Uppheim says that small recognition in the form of gifts is often very well received and helps to increase employee satisfaction and motivation at work.

I think the biggest benefit of giving tax-free gifts to employees is that they feel seen and appreciated. Employees are your company's most important asset, and keeping them motivated and loyal is a good investment in the future.

Significant tax benefits

Many companies are unaware of what and how much they can give to employees tax-free. This means they miss out on golden opportunities to recognize employees. Knowing the regulations, gifts can be used as an effective tool to keep employees happy and loyal to the company.

The main rule is that all employees and board members can receive gifts of up to NOK 5,000 tax-free each year. At the same time, the company receives a tax deduction for this amount.

In addition, gifts of so-called trivial value can be given, but also on major occasions such as weddings, anniversaries and retirement. The only restriction is that the gifts cannot be given in the form of cash. See a complete overview of the tax rules here.

Amount limits for tax-free gifts

  1. Companies can give gifts of up to NOK 5,000 tax-free to each employee each calendar year.
  2. Gifts of a trivial value of up to NOK 281 are considered tax-free.
  3. Companies can give up to NOK 8,000 tax-free to employees who have worked for 20, 30, 40 and 50 years in the company.
  4. Companies can give up to NOK 4,000 tax-free when employees get married, leave after at least 10 years in the company, retire, and turn 50, 60, 70 or 80 years old.
  5. Companies can give up to NOK 4,000 tax-free to employees when the company celebrates its 25th anniversary, and thereafter on anniversary years that are divisible by 25.

The moments that count

Employee recognition can be profitable for your business as it increases employee motivation, loyalty and satisfaction. This is especially true if the timing is right.

"Gift cards are the gift that gives the employee the greatest flexibility and makes it easiest for you to give recognition at the right times," says Truls.

Some great occasions for giving gifts to employees include:

Preboarding and onboarding

It can be effective to give new employees a little attention before they start their job. This helps the new employee feel welcome and wanted in the company, and facilitates a good start to the working relationship.

Anniversaries, birthdays and other anniversaries

Recognizing employees on anniversaries shows that you care about them. It's a great opportunity to show how grateful you are for your employees, and to show off a little of the effort they put in! For anniversaries, it's possible to lay it on thick, as the tax rules are particularly favorable.

Holidays

Holidays are perfect for creating a boost for your entire workforce. Whether it's Christmas, summer or Easter, you can send your employees into the holidays with a smile on their face and a positive feeling about the company. This increases the likelihood that they'll return after the holiday with the motivation to go the extra mile.

Recognition for good performance

Employees who go the extra mile often deserve and expect extra recognition. These rewards don't have to be big, the most important thing is to show that you notice and appreciate the extra effort put in.

Huma and Glede make employee gifts a breeze

In the past, giving gifts to employees has been time-consuming. You had to remember, decide on the gift, buy or order it and present it. It goes without saying that this can be stressful for HR in companies with many employees.

The new integration between Glede and Huma makes it easy to recognize your employees. Huma gives you a full overview of your employees' anniversaries, such as birthday, anniversary, start-up or departure. The integration allows you to easily schedule and send digital gift cards directly from Huma when important anniversaries come up. In addition, you don't have to think about what to give, as employees can use the gift card anywhere, directly from their mobile phone.
