To stand out as an attractive employer, it's important to give employees a positive experience. This is especially true when welcoming them on their first day of work.

The first few days can be challenging. It takes a lot of energy to understand your new work environment, and companies should provide the necessary reassurance and guidance new employees need.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to create an onboarding experience that makes a positive and lasting first impression. In this article, we'll outline five concrete steps you can take to give your company's new employees the perfect start.

Give a welcome gift

Giving new employees a welcome gift on their first day of work is a sure-fire winner. This shows your appreciation to the new hire and communicates that you're happy to have them on the team.

Some ideas for gifts suitable for the first day of work:

We recommend giving the welcome gift at the end of the new employee's first day. The beginning of their day will already be filled with a lot of information, so you may want to wait until they're a little less overwhelmed.

Try including a nice message like this with your welcome gift:

Nail down lunch plans

Getting to know new colleagues can be stressful, but it's incredibly important for employees to thrive in the workplace. Helping your new employee get in touch with colleagues can make a big difference. That's why it's a good idea to make sure the new employee has colleagues to have lunch with in the first few days at the office.

There are several different ways you can do this. If the employee is joining a small team, ask the new colleagues to take them to a team lunch at the company's expense. This is a great way to kick-start a new and hopefully long-lasting working relationship.

If your organization is larger and it's not possible to gather the entire team around a single lunch table, assign the new hire a lunch buddy. This person can take responsibility for inviting the new hire to lunch for the first few days.

For employees who work remotely, an online team activity is perfect for their first day. This could be a lunch or coffee break, for example. For remote-first companies, it's extra important to make sure the employee is included socially, as it doesn't happen naturally at the coffee machine.

Help them introduce themselves

While you don't want to bombard your employees with a busy first day of work, it's important that they have something to do to help them settle into their role. A great task to give to new employees on their first day can be to let them introduce themselves to their new colleagues in a simple and low-key way.

For example, you can ask if they want to make a short presentation or a funny video about themselves for their colleagues to watch. They can present this in person or email it to the new team during the day, which can make the coffee chat a little easier.

Give them a buddy

Instead of having an HR employee mentor the new hire on their first day, consider assigning them a buddy among their colleagues. This person can be their resource for answering questions on their first day and in the future. This is a great way to make the new hire feel included from day 1.

End the first working day with a check-in

The new employee probably has hundreds of questions, but the threshold for asking a lot of questions on the first day can be high for some. Therefore, it's a good idea to schedule a meeting at the end of the first day of work where the new employee can address any questions or concerns that have arisen.

This way, you can ensure that the new employee goes home feeling seen and cared for. It's also a good idea to ask for feedback from the onboarding experience so you can improve it for the future.
