Hi there 👋 The holiday rush is about to end, and workdays and routines are starting to fall into place again. In this article, we'll look at how HR managers can reward employees for their efforts in a way that benefits both the employee and the company.

Employee gifts can be very effective

Unikum Regnskap is an accounting firm that helps its clients with accounting, payroll, and HR-related tasks. Managing Director Truls Uppheim says that small recognitions in the form of gifts are often very well received, and help increase employee well-being and motivation at work.

I believe the biggest benefit of giving tax-free gifts to employees is that they feel seen and appreciated. Employees are a company's most important resource, and it is a good investment in the future to ensure that they are motivated and loyal.

Significant tax benefits

Many companies are not aware of what and how much they can give to employees tax-free. This means they miss out on golden opportunities to recognize employees. When you know the regulations, gifts can be used as an effective tool to keep employees happy and loyal to the company.

The main rule is that all employees and board members can receive gifts of up to NOK 5,000 tax-free each year. At the same time, the company receives a tax deduction for this amount.

In addition, gifts of so-called trivial value can be given, but also on larger occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, and retirement. The only restriction is that the gifts cannot be given in the form of cash. See a complete overview of the tax rules here .

Amount limits for tax-free gifts

  1. Companies can give gifts of up to NOK 5,000 tax-free to each employee each calendar year.
  2. Gifts of insignificant value up to NOK 281 are considered tax-free.
  3. Companies can give up to NOK 8,000 tax-free to employees who have worked for 20, 30, 40 and 50 years in the company.
  4. Companies can give up to NOK 4,000 tax-free when employees get married, leave after at least 10 years with the company, retire, and turn 50, 60, 70 or 80 years old.
  5. Companies can give up to NOK 4,000 tax-free to employees when the company has a 25th anniversary, and thereafter in anniversary years that are divisible by 25.

The moments that count

Employee recognition can be beneficial to your business, as it increases employee motivation, loyalty, and satisfaction, especially if the timing is right.

"Gift cards are the gift that gives the employee the most flexibility, and makes it easiest for you to give recognition at the right times," says Truls.

Some good occasions for giving gifts to employees include:

Pre-boarding and onboarding

It can be effective to give new employees a little attention before they start their job. This helps the new employee feel welcome and wanted in the company, and facilitates a good start to the employment relationship.

Anniversaries, birthdays and other celebrations

By recognizing employees on their anniversaries, you show that you care about them. It's a great opportunity to show how grateful you are for your employees and brag a little about the effort they put in! For anniversaries, it's possible to go big, as the tax rules are particularly favorable.

Holidays

Holidays are a great time to boost your entire workforce. Whether it's Christmas, summer, or Easter, sending your employees into the holidays with a smile on their face and a positive feeling about your company increases the likelihood that they'll return after the holidays motivated to give their all.

Recognition for good performance

Employees who go the extra mile often deserve and expect extra recognition. These rewards don't have to be big, the most important thing is to show that you notice and appreciate the extra effort they put in.

Huma and Glede Make employee gifts a breeze

In the past, giving gifts to employees was time-consuming. You had to remember it, decide on a gift, buy or order it, and deliver it. It goes without saying that this can be stressful for HR in companies with many employees.

Huma gives you a full overview of your employees' anniversaries, such as birthdays, anniversaries, start-ups, or retirements.
